Tenure, fees, royalties and rents
Tenure
Before tenure can be granted, native title and environmental factors need to be taken into account.
Types of forms of tenure:
Submit forms online, or access tenure enquiry reports via Mines Online.
See all granted tenures from 2011 to the present.
How or where an application can be submitted
The following shows where to lodge your application (in person or by post). Some applications (as indicated) can be lodged online.
Minerals
- Exploration permits (applications, changes of address): MyMinesOnline or at any mines lodgement office
- Mining claims (applications, dealings, renewals, changes of address): mines lodgement office for the relevant district
- Mineral development licences (applications, dealings and renewals): Brisbane District Office (Mining Registrar)
- Mining leases: Minerals Resource Management Centre or the mines lodgement office for the relevant district
- Prospecting permits: mines lodgement office for the relevant district
Coal
- Exploration permits: address listed in the tender document
- Mineral development licences (applications, dealings and renewals): Brisbane District Office (Mining Registrar)
- Mining leases: Coal Resource Management Centre or the mines lodgement office of the relevant district
Petroleum and gas
- Authority to prospect: address listed in the tender document
- Petroleum leases: address in the tender document or Sales Centre
- All other applications or dealings: Sales Centre
Greenhouse gas storage and geothermal
- Geothermal exploration permits and greenhouse gas capture (GHG) exploration permits: address in the tender document or Sales Centre
- All other applications or dealings: Sales Centre

Please note:
Electronic payment options are currently available for the payment of tenure rentals. Should you make electronic transfers for other exploration fee payments, ensure the details of your payment or remittance advice (including intended date of payment) are also emailed to exploration@dnrm.qld.gov.au
Include the permit type and permit number in the reference field to ensure correct identification of the payer. Failure to provide information required to receipt payments could result in unnecessary delays.
Royalties
Responsibility for royalty administration transferred from the department to the Office of State Revenue (OSR) within Queensland Treasury on 1 July 2011. Please refer to the Royalties on mining and petroleum tenures page.
Rents
Annual rental is payable on all mining, petroleum, geothermal and other tenures administered by the department. Please refer to the rents page.
